If SoundExchange had its way, everyone would be forced to comply with pre-determined royalty rates on formats like streaming and satellite radio. But wait: according to SiriusXM Radio, SoundExchange and ‘the industry’ is getting its way, through tactics that are collusive, anti-competitive, and simply illegal. And, making Sirius’ efforts to strike its own, direct licenses with rightsholders nearly impossible.
SoundExchange distributed $89.5 million in artist and label royalties during the recent, fourth quarter, an amount that moves the 2011 total to $292 million. That’s a 17 percent gain, and perhaps one contributor to emergency, ‘triage’ level repairs to the SoundExchange royalty processing system.
