Barts ArtVenture!, the eagerly anticipated gallery for family fun and creativity in downtown Birmingham, will open at the Birmingham Museum of Art on May 19. Although construction delays have bumped the grand opening from the originally announced March 10 date, BMA Education Curator Samantha Kelly assures the new gallery is worth the wait!
“It’s going to be fresh, innovative, and fun,” Ke;lly says. When Bart’s ArtVenture! opens it’s doors, we are confident kids and their parents will love it. There will be nowhere like it downtown where great art, hands-on art making activities, and quality family time will come together in such a fun and inspired way.
The interactive gallery will privide an enjoyable, colorful, everchanging way for kids and their parents to learn about the art in the BMA collection and to explore their reativity in unprecedented ways.
Bart’s ArtVenture! will also give artists in the community a new place to show off their talents. A changing community gallery space will allow for showcasing different artists’ family-friendly art throughout the year. the first artist on display will be Heather Spencer Holmes. whose installation Smack! will make you believe that jellyfish can fly!
throughout the new family gallery will be references to and invitations to explore the BMA’s stellar art collection. And new technology, designed just for Bar’s ArtVenturre!, will alow kids to step into great works of art and even create their own abstract designs.
“Children (and their adults) will be able to work in ageappropriate zones. While the Hess portion of the gallery is setup for bigger kids, the Sonat space is specifically set aside for toddlers and even crawlers,” Kelly said.
Construction is underway both off-site and at the Museum. When it is done, Bar’s ArtVenture! will offer families a new destination downtown for art-related adventures. “We can’t wait,” Kelly said. “to show how much fun art can be!”
